One-Step Equation Solver

Solve basic linear equations with one operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division).

Concept Overview

A one-step equation is an algebraic equation that can be solved in a single mathematical step using an inverse operation. The goal is always to isolate the variable (usually x) on one side of the equal sign.

The Golden Rule

Whatever operation you perform on one side of the equation, you must perform the exact same operation on the other side to keep the equation balanced.

Inverse Operations

To undo an operation, use its opposite: Addition undoes Subtraction, and Multiplication undoes Division (and vice versa).

Examples of One-Step Solutions

  • Addition: x - 5 = 10 → Add 5 to both sidesx = 15
  • Subtraction: x + 8 = 20 → Subtract 8 from both sidesx = 12
  • Multiplication: x / 4 = 3 → Multiply both sides by 4x = 12
  • Division: 5x = 25 → Divide both sides by 5x = 5
