Time Conversions and Speed Rates
Master time unit conversions across the base-60 and base-24 systems, and learn to convert compound rate units like mph to ft/s.
Time is the most universally used measurement β and the most irregular. Unlike the metric system (base 10) or even US customary length (some powers of 12), time uses base 60 for seconds and minutes, base 24 for hours, and base 7 for days. This makes time conversion more about knowing specific relationships than applying a general rule. Speed β distance per unit time β adds another layer: when you convert speed between mph, km/h, m/s, and ft/s, you must convert both the distance unit and the time unit simultaneously. Logistics managers, athletes, pilots, and software developers all work with time conversions daily.
- Convert fluently between seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and years
- Convert compound rate units (mph β ft/s β m/s β km/h) using unit fractions
- Apply time and rate conversions to real scheduling and physics problems
Key compound relationships:
\[ 1 \text{ hr} = 3{,}600 \text{ s} \qquad 1 \text{ day} = 86{,}400 \text{ s} \qquad 1 \text{ yr} \approx 31{,}557{,}600 \text{ s} \]Speed unit bridge:
\[ 1 \text{ mph} = \frac{5{,}280 \text{ ft}}{1 \text{ hr}} = \frac{5{,}280 \text{ ft}}{3{,}600 \text{ s}} = \frac{22}{15} \text{ ft/s} \approx 1.467 \text{ ft/s} \]Common Speed Conversions at a Glance
| Speed | mph | km/h | m/s | ft/s |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City speed limit | 30 | 48.3 | 13.4 | 44 |
| Highway speed | 65 | 104.6 | 29.1 | 95.3 |
| Commercial aircraft | 575 | 925 | 257 | 843 |
| Speed of sound (sea level) | 767 | 1,235 | 343 | 1,125 |
A computer process runs for 2.5 hours. How many seconds is that?
\[ 2.5 \text{ hr} \times \frac{60 \text{ min}}{1 \text{ hr}} \times \frac{60 \text{ s}}{1 \text{ min}} = 2.5 \times 3{,}600 = 9{,}000 \text{ s} \]Units cancel cleanly: hr cancels, min cancels, leaving seconds. β
A football player runs 15 mph. What is that in meters per second?
\[ 15 \frac{\text{mi}}{\text{hr}} \times \frac{1.609 \text{ km}}{1 \text{ mi}} \times \frac{1{,}000 \text{ m}}{1 \text{ km}} \times \frac{1 \text{ hr}}{3{,}600 \text{ s}} \] \[ = \frac{15 \times 1{,}609}{3{,}600} \frac{\text{m}}{\text{s}} \approx 6.71 \text{ m/s} \]15 mph β 6.7 m/s β or roughly 100 meters in 15 seconds.
A car traveling at 60 mph begins braking 0.3 seconds after the driver sees a hazard (reaction time). How far does the car travel during that reaction period, in feet?
\[ 60 \text{ mph} \times 1.467 \frac{\text{ft/s}}{\text{mph}} = 88 \text{ ft/s} \] \[ \text{Reaction distance} = 88 \text{ ft/s} \times 0.3 \text{ s} = 26.4 \text{ ft} \]At 60 mph, you travel nearly 27 feet before your foot hits the brake β about two car lengths. This is why following distance matters.
- How many minutes are in 3.5 days?
- A runner's pace is 8 minutes per mile. What is their speed in mph?
- Convert 30 m/s to km/h.
βΆ Show Answers
- \(3.5 \text{ days} \times 24 \text{ hr/day} \times 60 \text{ min/hr} = \mathbf{5{,}040 \text{ minutes}}\)
- 8 min/mi = 1/8 mi/min. Multiply by 60 min/hr: \(\frac{60}{8} = \mathbf{7.5 \text{ mph}}\)
- \(30 \text{ m/s} \times \frac{3{,}600 \text{ s/hr}}{1{,}000 \text{ m/km}} = \mathbf{108 \text{ km/h}}\)
- Confusing the reciprocal for rate conversion: To go from min/mile (pace) to miles/min (speed), flip the fraction β don't just change the unit label. 8 min/mi β 1/8 mi/min β Γ60 = 7.5 mph.
- Only converting one part of a compound unit: Converting mph to kph requires multiplying by 1.609; converting mph to m/s requires converting both the miles and the hours. Partial conversion gives a wrong result.
- Using 365 days/year instead of 365.25: For most problems, 365 is fine. For scientific calculations spanning years, use 365.25 to account for leap years β the error compounds over time.
- Time conversion uses: 60 sec/min, 60 min/hr, 24 hr/day, 7 days/wk, 365.25 days/yr.
- 1 hr = 3,600 seconds and 1 day = 86,400 seconds are worth memorizing for quick mental checks.
- For speed conversions, convert both the distance unit and the time unit separately, then combine.
- 1 mph β 1.467 ft/s and 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h are two commonly needed speed bridges.
Commercial pilots work in knots (nautical miles per hour), km/h, and m/s simultaneously β aircraft speed is in knots, weather wind is in m/s, and runway lengths are in feet or meters. Flight dispatch software converts between all of these constantly. Supply chain managers calculate transit time in hours, then convert to calendar days for customer ETAs. Software engineers measure latency in milliseconds and throughput in megabytes per second β both require precise unit conversion to benchmark systems meaningfully.
Calculator Connection
The Speed, Distance & Time calculator solves for any one of the three variables when you know the other two β and handles unit conversion internally, letting you input in miles and hours or meters and seconds without manual conversion.
